Applying to a UK university from Pakistan: entry requirements, CAS, visa and costs

Applying to a UK university from Pakistan comes down to four steps- meeting the academic and English requirements, accepting an offer, getting your CAS, and applying for the Student visa. Here is what each stage involves and how long to allow.

Applying to a UK university from Pakistan takes four steps: choose a course and check you meet its academic and English requirements, receive and accept an offer, pay a deposit so the university can issue your CAS, and then apply for a Student visa using that CAS. Most applicants target the September intake, and many UK universities also run a January intake.

This guide walks through each stage, what your Pakistani qualifications are worth, what it costs, and how long to allow.

How to apply to a UK university from Pakistan: the four steps

  1. Choose a course and check the entry requirements: both academic and English.

  1. Apply and receive an offer. Most offers are conditional at first, meaning you still need to provide something: final results, an English test score, or documents.

  1. Meet the conditions, accept the offer, and pay the deposit. The university then issues your CAS.

  1. Apply for your Student visa, attend your biometrics appointment, and prepare to travel.

You do not need to use UCAS for most postgraduate courses or for many undergraduate courses at the universities UAPP works with: direct applications are accepted, which usually means a faster decision and a later deadline.

What your Pakistani qualifications are worth

This is the question that decides which year you enter, and it varies more between universities than any other factor.

Your qualification

Typically leads to

Matriculation (Year 10)

Not sufficient on its own - progress via FSc, HSSC or an international foundation year

FSc, HSSC or Intermediate

A foundation year or International Year One at many universities; direct Year 1 entry at some, with strong marks

A-levels taken in Pakistan

Direct entry to Year 1, assessed the same way as UK A-levels

Bachelor’s degree

Postgraduate entry, though some universities require a four-year degree for master’s admission

HND or diploma

Possible entry with advanced standing, or onto a top-up course, decided case by case

Because the grade requirements differ by course, the practical approach is to pick two or three courses and have the requirements checked for each, rather than assuming a general rule applies.

English language requirements

There are two separate requirements and they are easy to confuse.

The university’s requirement is set by the university. Many accept a range of English tests, and some accept a medium-of-instruction letter from your previous institution or run their own assessment.

The visa requirement is set by UK Visas and Immigration. For some applicants the Home Office requires a Secure English Language Test from an approved provider - in that case a university’s own test will not satisfy the visa rules, however happy the university is with it.

Check both before booking anything. If you fall short of the score you need, a pre-sessional English course is the usual route: you study English at the university for several weeks before your main course starts.

Offers, deposits and your CAS

A CAS- a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies - is an electronic reference number issued by a licensed UK university once it has accepted you and is satisfied that you are a genuine student who can fund the course. You cannot apply for a Student visa without one.

The sequence matters: conditional offer, then meeting the conditions, then an unconditional offer, then the deposit, and only then the CAS. A CAS also has an expiry date, so the timing of your deposit affects your visa timeline.

The UK Student visa

You apply online, pay the application fee and the immigration health surcharge, and attend an appointment to give your biometrics. Applicants from Pakistan also need a tuberculosis test certificate from a clinic approved by the Home Office.

You will need to show that you have enough money to cover your tuition for the first year plus living costs for a set period, and that the money has been held in a qualifying account for a continuous period before you apply. The amounts, the holding period and the list of acceptable evidence are published on gov.uk, and they change - check them directly rather than relying on a figure from a forum.

Some applicants are asked to attend a short credibility interview, where a caseworker checks that you understand your course and your plans. A small number of courses, mainly in science and engineering, also require ATAS clearance before you apply.

What it costs

Plan for three groups of costs.

Tuition: International tuition fees differ from the Home fees shown on many course pages, so check the international rate for your specific course before budgeting.
Living costs: Your visa application has its own living-cost requirement, which differs for London and for the rest of the UK, but your actual spending will depend on the city and how you live. One-off costs.
The visa application fee, the immigration health surcharge, the TB test, travel and your initial deposit. Current amounts for the visa fee and health surcharge are published on gov.uk.

Intakes and timing

September is the main intake. January is widely available, particularly on business, computing and management courses, and a few courses also run a May intake.

Work backwards from the intake date rather than forwards from today. Allow time for the offer, for meeting conditions, for the deposit and CAS, and for visa processing - which varies through the year and is busiest in the run-up to September. Each course page lists its own intake and application deadline.

Scholarships for Pakistani students

There are three broad categories worth looking at.

  • University scholarships and fee discounts, often awarded automatically on academic merit or for early payment - these are the most commonly awarded and the least publicised.

  • UK government schemes such as Chevening and the Commonwealth Scholarships, which are highly competitive, aimed mainly at postgraduate study, and have fixed annual deadlines.

  • Subject-specific and country-specific awards, which vary each year.

Check the current awards and deadlines with each university and on the scheme’s own website, as both change annually.

Already living in the UK? You are probably a Home student

If you are a Pakistani national already living in the UK - with settled or pre-settled status, indefinite leave to remain, refugee status or similar - and you have been ordinarily resident here for the qualifying period, you are likely to be classed as a Home student rather than an international one.

That is a substantially different and usually much cheaper application. You would pay Home tuition fees, you would not need a Student visa, and you may be eligible for Student Finance England. If this describes you, do not follow the international route by default - have your fee status checked first.

Yes. An FSc or HSSC qualification most commonly leads to a foundation year or an International Year One, which then feeds into the degree. Some universities accept strong FSc results for direct entry to Year 1. The marks required vary by course, so have your specific courses checked.

A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies is an electronic reference number a licensed UK university issues once it has accepted you and is satisfied you are a genuine student who can fund the course. You cannot apply for a Student visa without it, and it has an expiry date, so timing matters.

Enough to cover your outstanding tuition for the first year plus living costs for a set period, held in a qualifying account for a continuous period before you apply. The amounts and the holding period are set by the Home Office and published on gov.uk.

Sometimes. Many universities accept alternative English tests, a medium-of-instruction letter or their own assessment. But where UK Visas and Immigration requires a Secure English Language Test, only an approved SELT will satisfy the visa rules. Check both the university requirement and the visa requirement.

A January start is widely available, particularly on business, computing and management courses. Each course page lists its own intake and application deadline, so check the specific course and work backwards to allow for visa processing.

Students on the Student route can usually work a limited number of hours during term time and full-time during vacations, with some restrictions on the type of work. The current limits are published on gov.uk.

The Graduate route allows eligible students who have completed a UK degree to stay and work, or look for work, for a period after graduating. Check the current duration and conditions on gov.uk.

No. If you hold settled or pre-settled status, indefinite leave to remain or refugee status and meet the residence requirement, you are likely to be a Home student - paying Home fees, with no Student visa needed and possible eligibility for Student Finance England. Have your fee status checked before applying.
